How strenuous are the hikes?

Expect to walk 2–4 miles over uneven terrain, including tall grasses, soft soils, and slight inclines. While the pace is moderate, with frequent stops for discussion, participants should be comfortable walking for several hours in the open sun.

Marietta Sand: Easy access and walking in the sand prairie. Bring boots if you want to explore the wetland areas. Hiking distance of 0.75 to 1.0 miles.

Doolittle: Total hiking distance about 1.25 to 1.5 miles over level terrain. The route may encounter shallowly flooded conditions.

Don Williams: Exact route TBD. Terrain relatively flat with moderate incline. Hiking distance under 1.0 miles.

Iowa Arboretum: Easy access and walking on mowed paths through a 4-acre prairie restoration. Hiking distance of 0.5 miles.

What should I wear?

Dress for hot, humid conditions and tall vegetation:

  • Lightweight, breathable long sleeves and pants (to protect against sun, ticks, and brush)

  • Sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes or boots

  • Wide-brim hat or cap for sun protection

  • Sunglasses and sunscreen

What should I bring?

  • Plenty of water

  • Bug spray (ticks and mosquitoes can be present)

  • Notebook or sketchbook (optional, but great for notes and inspiration)

  • Binoculars (if interested in birdwatching)

What happens if the weather is bad?

The tour will proceed in light rain or cloudy conditions but will be canceled for severe weather (high winds, severe thunderstorms, and extreme heat advisories). Participants will be notified of any schedule changes via email with as much advance notice as reasonably possible.

The tour is subject to changes or adjustments based on weather conditions and factors beyond our control. No refunds will be issued if the tour proceeds in some capacity (even if shortened or adjusted). If inclement weather causes the tour to be canceled entirely, we will issue a full refund. Cancellations will be communicated to guests as soon as possible.

Are there bathrooms available?

Restrooms will be available on the bus and at the Iowa Arboretum.

Is this hike suitable for children?

The event is designed for adults over the age of 18.

Can I bring my dog?

For the safety of wildlife and other participants, pets are not allowed.
